The hazards of Calcium nitride, first-aid measures, and storage methods
Calcium nitride can damage human skin, causing skin itching, inflammation, "bird's eye" ulcers, and melanoma. Its burns to the skin are manifested as long-term unhealed wounds and chronic ulcers. Workers who are often exposed to calcium nitride will have clinical manifestations of less sweating, enamel damage, and increased incidence of dental caries.
It is non-flammable when dry and easily burns when wet. When calcium nitride encounters water or moisture, it can quickly produce highly flammable acetylene gas. When it reaches a certain concentration in the air, explosive disasters can occur. In addition, calcium nitride can react violently with acids.
When the skin comes into contact with calcium nitride, you should immediately remove the contaminated clothing, rinse with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes, and then seek medical attention as soon as possible. If calcium nitride is accidentally splashed into your eyes, you should immediately lift your eyelids, rinse thoroughly with a large amount of running water or saline for at least 15 minutes, and then seek medical attention immediately.
If you accidentally inhale a certain amount of calcium nitride, you should leave the scene immediately and move to a place with fresh air. At the same time, keep the airway open, if breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If there is an emergency that stops breathing, give artificial respiration immediately, and then seek medical attention.
Once the calcium nitride leaks, it should isolate the leaked contaminated area, restrict personnel access, and cut off the source of the fire. It is recommended that emergency personnel wear self-contained positive pressure respirators, wear chemical protective clothing, and do not directly touch the leakage. If it is a small amount of leakage, it can be mixed with sand, dry lime, or soda ash. Then, use non-sparking tools to collect in a dry, clean, covered container, and transfer to a safe place. However, when the amount of leakage is large, it must be covered with plastic sheeting or canvas, and then contact the relevant technical department to determine the removal method. In case of accidental combustion of calcium nitride, water or foam should be prohibited to extinguish fires. Carbon dioxide fire extinguishing is also ineffective. At this time, dry graphite powder or other dry powder (such as dry sand) must be used to extinguish the fire.
Since calcium nitride is flammable and explosive, the storage environment must be a cool, dry, and well-ventilated warehouse, and it must be far away from fire and heat sources. The relative humidity of the air in the warehouse should be kept below 75%. The packaging of calcium nitride must be sealed and kept away from moisture. At the same time, calcium nitride should be stored separately from acids, alcohols, etc., and should not be mixed. Just in case, the storage area must be equipped with suitable materials to contain the leakage.
